Introducing Dr. Sean Polster From The University of Chicago!

We are proud to introduce the 2025 Matthew Friedman Memorial Foundation Preventative Brain Aneurysm Research Grant Recipient: Dr. Sean Polster, a leading neurosurgeon and researcher whose work is shaping the future of brain aneurysm prevention.

On April 12, 2023 19-year old Matthew Friedman passed away in his sleep from a ruptured brain aneurysm. In the wake of this unimaginable loss, The Matthew Friedman Memorial Foundation was created in honor of Matthew’s legacy. Each year the foundation raises $25,000 to support a TBF Preventative Brain Aneurysm Research Grant in his name, supporting groundbreaking work aimed at preventing similar tragedies.

This year’s recipient, Dr. Polster earned his Medical degree from the University of Wisconsin, completed his residency at The University of Chicago, and pursued a Capstone Fellowship at The University of Pittsburgh. He has since returned to The University of Chicago, where he now combines cutting-edge research with his clinical practice as a cerebrovascular and skull base neurosurgeon.

Sean Polster, MD and his team at The University of Chicago will be investigating a groundbreaking approach to aneurysm detection through their study: “Quantitative Imaging of Aneurysm Wall Permeability Using Ktrans to Identify Unstable Intracranial Aneurysms.”

Their research focuses on the use of Ktrans, a permeability biomarker measured through contrast enhanced MRI, to identify high-risk intracranial aneurysms. Their goal is to validate Ktrans as a non-invasive diagnostic tool to detect unstable aneurysms before they rupture.

We extend our sincerest thank you Dr. Polster for your dedication and devotion to advancing our shared mission: preventing brain aneurysm ruptures. We look forward to the impact his work will have in years to come.

Thank you to TBF Ambassador, Cat Navarro Lee for conducting this interview!
