Some conversations stay with you long after the lights dim and the room grows quiet…This was one of them.
At the 2025 HoneyBash Gala, guests bore witness to a powerful and deeply moving dialogue between Dr. Christopher Kellner, a neurosurgeon at Mount Sinai, and his patient, Julie Brothers, a woman whose life was forever changed by a single moment and the care that followed.
Dr. Kellner is known not only for his technical excellence, but for his unwavering commitment to treating every patient as a person first. Julie is one of many whose life he has helped save, but hearing their story together, side by side, transforms statistics into something far more meaningful, hope.
In April of 2024, after a long day of work, Julie felt a sudden, intense pain at the back of her head. She remembers feeling as though something snapped. Accompanying the pain, came blurry vision, nausea, and shortly after, a stiff neck. Still, like so many people do, Julie tried to rationalize it away. Maybe it’s just a migraine, she thought and tried to sleep.
When the pain refused to loosen its grip, she took herself to a walk-in clinic. After describing her symptoms, she was given an injection of NSAID and sent home. But the pain only intensified. Trusting her instinct, Julie went to the emergency room at Mount Sinai, a decision that would save her life. It was there that she met Dr. Kellner, and learned the truth: she was suffering from a ruptured brain aneurysm.
Today, Julie is a fierce advocate for aneurysm awareness, dedicated to ensuring others recognize the warning signs she now knows all too well. With a strong background in communication, Julie has transformed trauma into purpose, using her voice to speak for those who cannot, and to remind others to listen to their bodies when something feels wrong.
On October 18th, Julie and Dr. Kellner reunited for an open, honest, and deeply moving fireside chat. Together, they reflected on her diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and the life she is rebuilding after her rupture. Their conversation underscores something essential: the power of being heard, the importance of finding the right care, and the courage it takes to heal.
